London City Airport has become the first airport in the UK to enable customers to use Facebook Messenger to find out the latest real-time information about their flight.
Following a short trial period, from today any passenger who has Facebook Messenger on their device can send their flight number on the day of travel to the LCY Flight Info Facebook page and receive personalised flight information.
The automated messages provide up-to-the-minute information on flight status, including departure and arrival time and boarding gate numbers, removing the need to constantly check flight information screens.
Both departing passengers and those waiting for passengers to arrive can get the information relevant to them.
The new Facebook Messenger functionality coincides with the latest passenger analysis for the first quarter of 2016, which found that for the first time ever the proportion of under-35 passengers reached 35 per cent at London City Airport.
It is expected that millennial travellers will be among the first to use the service.
Alison FitzGerald, chief information officer at London City Airport, said: "The majority of our passengers are connected to social media and many of these are business travellers, so it makes perfect sense to offer flight updates directly to their smartphones via Facebook Messenger.
"We already offer free Wi-Fi and a check-in time of 20 minutes or less, and this is another way of ensuring a hassle-free, personalised customer experience."

Marriott International continues to lead the way in digital and social marketing innovation with the launch of the company's fourth M Live Studio.
Located at Marriott's European headquarters in London, the newest studio will serve as the epicentre for creating real-time content and generating social engagement with travellers in Europe.
M Live will engage in conversations in multiple languages including French, Spanish, German, Italian and English.
M Live empowers Marriott to interact with guests in a more personalised way and participate in one-to-one conversations on social platforms where travellers are already actively engaged.
It tracks conversations, trends, global performance, marketing campaigns and brand reputation across social platforms in real-time, identifying opportunities for Marriott to engage consumers with its 19 brands and nearly 4,500 properties worldwide.
Marriott International's vice president of global creative and content marketing, David Beebe, explained: "We created M Live with an understanding that real-time marketing always starts with the guest, and the best way to engage with consumers is to start a two-way conversation that is relevant to their needs and preferences as travellers."
M Live is designed to engage with guests around cultural moments that are relevant to what they are already talking about on social media.
"We've turned the tables from creating general content distributed to thousands of guests to listening and leveraging a single moment that's relevant and shareable between thousands of guests," said Matthew Glick, senior director of global creative and content marketing.
"Not only are we able to discover these moments to engage with consumers quickly, but also identify opportunities by brand, by discipline, by market and by channel to create memorable and shareable experiences."

With all the racial tension we’re experiencing in our country today, I feel it is important for me to understand the history, the mistakes we have made and what I can do for my children to instill in their generation a strong future. We also saw some art, ate BBQ and cheered on the Rangers to a win! KCMO holds a pretty special place in my heart.

Sabre has unveiled a new mobile duty of care solution to help corporations monitor their employees trips. SafePoint aims to provides peace of mind for corporations by bringing risk management to the traveller.

Travelport has appointed Scott Forbes to its Board of Directors. He replaces Gregory Blank from Blackstone who has tendered his resignation to the Board following Blackstone's share sell down in March of this year. Scott's appointment is effective immediately.
Scott, an experienced non-executive director, has over 35 years' of operations, finance and online experience across a range of industry sectors. He currently serves as Chairman of two LSE-listed companies: Ascential plc, an international business to business media company; and Rightmove Group plc, the UK's number one property website which has been growing steadily since its inception over 15 years ago. Scott is also Chairman of the Innasol Group Limited, a leading UK renewable energy company, and was previously Chairman of Orbitz Worldwide, one of the world's largest online travel agencies, until its sale to Expedia in September 2015.
Before that, Scott spent 15 years at Cendant Corporation, which was formerly the largest provider of travel and residential property services worldwide. While at Cendant Corporation, Scott held a number of senior executive roles including Group Managing Director of Cendant Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Commenting on the appointment, Doug Steenland, Chairman of the Travelport Board of Directors, said: "I am very pleased to welcome Scott Forbes to our Board. Scott has deep experience in the travel industry, and also in the online and digital space, and has led, acquired and scaled multiple businesses. Following an early morning robbery aboard the Amazon Discovery on July 14, Delfin Amazon Cruises has implemented improved security measures on all of its vessels.
Prior to the robbery, the Discovery had cruised with 24-hour unarmed guards and a spotlighting system for surveillance. All entrances to the ship have metal security doors, which are sealed at 6:30 p.m.
Now, Delfin has added plainclothes armed members of Peru's National Police. They are on duty around the clock. Also, a laser alarm system is being installed on all ships. The alarm triggers when a mass of more than 150 pounds approaches. These new measures will be in place indefinitely.
The robbery took place at 3:30 a.m. on July 14 while the ship was on the Amazon River about two hours south of Iquitos, Peru. Seven assailants carrying small firearms boarded the ship from the stern after approaching in a motorboat. The bandits took approximately $ 22,000 in cash as well as valuables that have yet to be appraised. No guests were injured.
The search for the bandits is ongoing, and Delfin is working with local authorities to identify them.
"Last week's robbery was an isolated incident. It was the first event of its kind in Delfin Amazon Cruises' 10 years of cruising the Amazon River," the company said. "We do not believe the region is any less safe for visitors."

FCM Travel Solutions has announced the appointment of a new global leader, with Marcus Eklund appointed to the role.
He will begin work in late August this year.
Most recently from the travel technology company Amadeus, Eklund has worked closely with FCM in recent years and has extensive experience working with both travel agencies and corporations on management of business travel programs.
"We are very excited to bring Marcus on board.
"With his travel industry experience and his deep knowledge of international businesses and customs from having lived and worked in eight different countries over his career – he will be a great asset to the brand," said Steve Norris, managing director of Flight Centre Corporate for Europe & Africa.
The announcement comes after Eklund's predecessor, Gregory Lording, announced his intention to take an extended sabbatical leave after six successful years growing the organisation's global network and multinational business.
"FCM has gone from strength to strength in recent years, growing from 50 countries to more than 90 and seeing revenue from multinational sales more than double since 2011," said Norris.
"We would like to acknowledge Gregory for his contribution over the last six years and equally look forward to the continued success of FCM Travel Solutions with Marcus as the new global leader."
As part of the new appointment, the location of the role has been moved from Sydney to London, as FCM continues its focus on multinational business opportunities in Europe and North America, expanding off the successful footprint built in the Asia-Pacific where the company was founded.

Skyscanner has revealed travellers will be able to search for hotels and car hire from the existing flights app.
The trend for both searching and booking travel on mobile has accelerated dramatically in recent years, with the Skyscanner apps having been downloaded over 40 million times worldwide.
Almost half of all Skyscanner searches in the UK are now made using a mobile device, while the last year alone has seen a 38 per cent increase in people booking via smartphones in the UK.
In an effort to make searching and booking travel even easier, the free Skyscanner app (compatible with both iOS and Android devices) will continue to deliver personalised, relevant and inspirational travel information, in addition to exciting brand new features designed to save travellers time and money.

Description: People are obsessed with time travel. After all, who hasn't dreamed of hooking some form of flux capacitor up to the family car and heading back in time to see what things were really like? Unfortunately, those pesky scientists have argued time and time again that time travel is simply not possible. What do they know? OK, so in order to make it possible we'd have to travel faster than the speed of light which is theoretically impossible to do. We'd probably need a DeLorean because it would make things just feel right – and they are getting harder and harder to find in good running order. Finally, you'd need some uranium to power your time machine – if the movies are anything to go by – and given the way the way the world reacts to certain countries handling the radioactive stuff we're thinking that might be pretty near impossible. Still, none of this 'proof' has stopped us from thinking about time travel and dreaming that one day we could go forward or backwards in time. Until then, we'll just have to let our imaginations run wild as we search for any shred of 'evidence' to prove that time travel is possible. And searched we have. Recently, there's been a big trend of searching out old photos to find anomalies or things that just don't fit. Whether objects or people who seem out of place, some have taken this as proof of some sort of time travel ability. We'll let you take a look and be the judge of it all.
