On Waimea Canyon trail, a step back

Standing on a steep slope of loose, red lava rock and peering hundreds of feet down to the lush floor of Kauai’s Waimea Canyon, I recognized the sound of rushing water.

About 90 minutes earlier, I’d started my trek along a hiking path recognized simply as the Canyon Trail, descending initial by means of a dense forest loaded with native koa and ohia lehua trees just before venturing a lot more not too long ago onto the open, lava rock ridgeline.

Certain that the water I heard was the stream feeding nearby Waipoo Falls, I did my very best to capture the show-stopping canyon vista before me with my little camera and then hurried on down the trail, hoping to attain the waterfall just before anybody else.Waipoo Falls. I’d driven away from my accommodations at the historical Waimea Plantation Cottages before 8 a.m. specifically to get the jump on the eventual stream of rental automobiles and crowds that head up daily to Waimea for photo ops at two properly-recognized drive-up lookouts.

And although the Canyon Trail has turn out to be increasingly well-liked in current years, most Kauai guests still do not set aside time to discover the region’s several hiking paths, numerous of which traverse nearby Kokee State Park, and they miss a fantastic opportunity to discover some of Hawaii’s best-preserved native forest.

“On some of these trails, you may have the chance not only to hear endangered birds but also see them,” stated Chris Faye, the director of the Kokee Museum.

“When you go into the forest up at Kokee, you are seeing around 90% native plants and trees rather than when you happen to be down in the lowlands, where 90% of the plants are introduced,” she added. “It really is just a various world up there.”

Travelers keen to discover some of the numerous hikes in the gorgeous forests of Kokee State Park and around Waimea Canyon need to contemplate booking at least a couple of nights at the Waimea Plantation Cottages, which are just more than a half-hour’s drive from the attraction’s first lookout point. But the charming collection of much more than 60 small houses, some dating as far back as 1884 and each and every linked straight to Kauai’s robust sugar plantation era, also delivers Hawaii guests a mix of history and authenticity that’s tough to uncover elsewhere in the Islands.

“It just goes against the norm for the rest of the state,” said Gregg Enright, the Waimea Plantation Cottages basic manager. “There are not a lot of properties, if any, that can transport you back in time like this 1 can.”

Accommodations at Waimea Plantation Cottages date to Kauai's sugar plantation era.Accommodations at Waimea Plantation Cottages date to Kauai's sugar plantation era.

Ranging from a 5-bedroom, ocean-front residence priced at $ 879 per evening to a single-bedroom units for $ 149 per evening, every single of the property’s renovated cottages function period-inspired furnishings full kitchens with modern day appliances covered outdoor lanais massive bathrooms comfy bedrooms and generally a combination living space and dining space.

Shaded by a troupe of swaying palm trees and fronted by a generally deserted black-sand beach, the 27-acre home is a superb spot to merely sit outdoors in the fragrant breeze and soak in the rhythm of the ocean whilst carrying out completely nothing.

“If you happen to be a client searching for the massive resort experience, like at the Ritz, the Sheraton, the Hyatt, and that is all you know, this house isn’t for you,” mentioned Steve Douglas, the reservation manager for wholesaler All About Hawaii. “But if you’re a person who wants to step back from the norm and see anything various, this is a distinctive opportunity.”

Douglas said the Waimea Plantation Cottages are often the best fit for repeat guests searching for a more authentic, nearby knowledge on their return. And the layout makes it a wonderful location for multigenerational family bookings and people preparing huge weddings.

Coast Hotels USA took more than management of the house final summer, right after it had been run for nearly 19 years by Aston Hotels &amp Resort. Function on a $ 1.two million refurbishment began early this year, such as improvements like replacing bedding throughout the property, adding air conditioning to the master bedrooms and new paint and curtains in all cottages.

“We just want to bring the status up a tiny,” Enright mentioned. “But we want to keep accurate to what this location has always been without having altering the ambience or the heritage.”

Mykonos

Greatest Cocktail
Bartenders island-wide will make something you want, but if you want to drink like a Greek, stick to ouzo or the neighborhood brew, Mythos, which is very good — and cheap, at just a few dollars for a hefty draft.
Top

Greatest Souvenir

Souvenir shops are full of trinkets and postcards with a windmill theme. Leather items — handmade sandals, tote bags and backpacks — also are common. So are the flowing white cotton dresses and shirts that are so appropriate for the island setting.

Jewelry at all prices glitters in shops windows, from the high-priced 18-karat gold pieces at higher-end shops to spending budget-friendly but fashionable items (several starting at around 7 euros). For exclusive pieces, Sur Real (P. Drakopoulou 1), a handful of methods off the waterfront has handcrafted leather jewelry: necklaces, belts, bracelets and rings. The bracelets, which are the most well-liked things, are set with various stones (or watches) and start about 50 euros.

Shops generally open from 10 a.m. until late night numerous close for a couple of hours around two p.m. When cruise ships are present, some shops remain open all day.

Top

Language
Greek is the official language, though English is broadly spoken, as are some European languages. Locals will appreciate a “YAH soo” (hello), “ef-hah-rees-TOH” (thank you) — and any other phrases you can pick up prior to your cruise.

Currency &amp Very best Way to Get Funds

The euro is the official currency. For updated currency-conversion figures, pay a visit to www.oanda.com or www.xe.com. ATMs are scattered throughout town and can be the least expensive and easiest way to get money. Most shops and restaurants accept major credit cards. Nevertheless, as one particular regional said, “Money is king.” That means you may do greater supplying money to strike a bargain.

There are several bank offices in Hora, open 8 a.m. to two:30 p.m. weekdays and till 2 p.m. Fridays. A passport is necessary when altering money.

Exactly where You’re Docked

Cruise ships dock at the new port in Tourlos nevertheless, when no space is available, they anchor in the harbor and tender passengers to the old port in Hora (recognized merely as the old port or the harbor).

If you dock at Tourlos, you won’t see anything beyond an ATM and a modest canteen exactly where you can purchase water or soft drinks. Your cruise line will supply a shuttle to the edge of town. Other alternatives: the public bus (1.six euros) or a water taxi (2 euros).

If you are tendered to Hora, property to most of the ferries, you’ll discover a world of cafes, restaurants and purchasing at your feet. (And you are within easy walking distance of the center of town and numerous highlights.) You will also locate tour operators there.

Top

Hanging Around

There is not a lot to see at the Tourlos port, so you happen to be much better off taking the shuttle to town. If you’re in the old port, there is a lot to do. Linger at one of the waterfront cafes over a frappe coffee, the popular Greek version of iced coffee that comes topped with foam. Maybe “Petros Pelican,” the island mascot will show up, and you are going to have a fantastic photo op.

Everything in town is walkable. Choose any of the winding streets (nearby legend says they had been so designed to repel pirates) off the harbor and you will locate shops, restaurants and cafes everywhere. You can easily and comfortably spend hours buying, snacking or dining (and checking email, as free of charge Wi-Fi is accessible at numerous cafes and restaurants).

Receiving Around

On Foot: most of Hora’s attractions are inside easy walking distance — no more than ten or 15 minutes — from the old port (harbor). From Tourlos, walking to town (about a half-hour) is achievable but not recommended due to the fact there are no sidewalks, the terrain is not even and the road is fairly busy in season.

By Taxi: If you want to venture beyond the town, there is a taxi stand at Manto Mavrogenous Square (occasionally referred to as Town Square or Taxi Square). It is marked with a bust of Manto Mavrogenous, the heroine of the 1821 War of Independence. Rates are fixed according to destination and differ by season. Phoning for a cab (22890/23700 or 22894/22400) is additional, also according to season (about 1.5 euros), and an appointment charges at least 5 euros. There are a limited quantity of taxis on the island so they could be tough to get in higher season.

By Bus: There are two bus stations. The major Fabrica (also spelled Fabrika) in the southern section of town serves Ornos, Aghios, Ioannis, Platys Gialos, Psarou, Paranga and Paradise. The other, Fabrica, in the northern element of town, serves Ano Mera village and the beaches of Elia and Kalafatis. Typical fares are less than 2 euros.

By Boat: Modest boats (caiques) are one particular way to visit the beaches at the southern and western component of the island. Check the travel agencies at the old port for schedules, departure points and fares.

Watch Out For
ATVs and all sorts of two- and three-wheel automobiles speed around corners and up and down the narrow streets. This seems to be a chronic and significant dilemma, not only due to the fact ATVs are a common way of obtaining about, but also since several deliveries to shops and restaurants are made by mini-trucks that travel the very same streets used by pedestrians.

Never Miss

If you don’t take a formal walking tour, you can very easily hit any or all of these attractions on your own, using a map you can pick up just before you leave your ship.

Hora is overlooked by the well-known white Venetian windmills (Kato Myli), which may possibly be the very first issue passengers see when cruise ships approach the harbor. Built by the Venetians in the 16th century, they had been employed to grind wheat until the early 20th century. Some have been restored and all of them are popular subjects for photographers and artists. You can climb the hill to the windmills for a close appear — or take your photographs from the harbor with a zoom lens.

Located close to the main harbor entrance in the Kastro (castle) location, the oldest part of town, the Byzantine church Panagia Paraportiani is the oldest in Mykonos — and probably the most photographed church in Greece. Dating to 1475, it’s really a group of 5 smaller sized churches, which had been constructed more than a period of time and completed in the 17th century. Hours fluctuate, but it may be open in the morning. Admission is cost-free (do not enter in the course of services), but donations are appreciated.

Near the church and situated in an 18th-century creating is the Mykonian Folklore Museum, displaying period furniture (most from the 19th century) that shows how middle-class residents lived. Also right here: tools, weapons, lighting devices, tapestries, ceramics, photographs and connected artifacts. (Open five:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays and 5 p.m. to eight p.m. Sundays from April to October admission totally free, but donations appreciated)

Facing the old harbor is the Archaeological Museum, which homes collections from numerous excavations. These include funerary statues and grave stelae, pottery, clay figurines, jewelry and modest objects — all dating from the second and very first centuries B.C. Of unique interest is a large relief from the seventh century B.C., decorated with scenes from the capture of Troy: the descent of Greeks from the wooden horse and warriors attacking women and young children. (Open eight:30 a.m. to three p.m. Tuesday to Sunday admission three euros, cost-free on Sunday)

Photogenic Small Venice, positioned where the westernmost element of town meets the sea, is so named for the medieval houses with balconies that overhang the water. Pirates frequented Mykonos throughout the 16th and 17th century, and it really is believed that they loaded and unloaded their booty in this area. Today, you will locate boutiques, restaurants and cafes. If time permits, grab a table at Katerina’s (Agion Anargyron eight 22890/23084 open 11 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. from March to November), which has two levels, and nurse a cocktail even though you watch the sunset.

Although you’re in Little Venice, you have a very good possibility of seeing Petros Pelican, the Mykonos mascot. The initial Petros was rescued soon after a storm in 1954 and lived on the island for more than 30 years. When he died, the loss was felt so deeply that a replacement was soon located — and a tradition was established.

Guests interested in Greek history, mythology and archeology need to head to nearby Delos, the spiritual and geographic center of the Cyclades island chain. Regarded a holy spot for thousands of years, Greek mythology holds that the island is the birthplace of Apollo and his twin sister Artemis, offspring of Zeus. The 1.5-square-mile island consists of numerous ruins and an impressive archeological museum. Bear in mind to bring your water — the dry, rocky island can turn into brutally hot in the summer season.

Been There, Carried out That

The Aegean Maritime Museum, positioned in the center of town in the area recognized as Tria Pigadia (Three Wells), was property to renowned sea captain Nikolaos Sourmelis. Exhibits consist of models of ships from the pre-Minoan period to the early 20th century, navigational gear, maps, a collection of ancient rare coins with nautical subjects and thousands of uncommon books. In the garden are reproductions of ancient gravestones from Delos and Mykonos connected to shipwrecks and sailors lost at sea. (Open 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday admission 3 Euros)

The renowned Tria Pigadia, the 3 wells for which the area is named, are located near the museum. According to legend, if a virgin drinks from all 3, she will discover a husband a a lot more current story says that if a visitor drinks from the wells, he or she will return. (Please do not test the truth of these tales.)

If you’d like to see a lot more than Hora — and religious websites in distinct — you can take the bus from the north station to the picturesque village of Ano Mera, only four miles away. In the town square is the 16th-century Monastery of Panagia Tourliani, which houses Cretan icons, an Italian baroque altar screen, fine Byzantine wood carvings and a modest museum of ecclesiastical objects. Nearby are tavernas and souvenir shops.

So you have completed the trip to Delos, the guided walking tour and the scenic island drive and the Ano Mera Monastery. How about a two-hour horseback ride on Fokos Beach to the north? It costs about 65 euros and could be arranged by means of the ship or with a regional tour operator.

The waters of Mykonos are wealthy with sea life (and a couple of shipwrecks). Several dive centers — at Paradise beach, Psarou beach and Kalafatis — supply education for beginners and excursions for certified divers. For a much more relaxing way to view marine life, the Discovery glassbottom yacht gives a option of excursions starting at 45 euros.

Beaches

The beaches on Mykonos are among the ideal in Greece, and there is one for each taste. Numerous are gay friendly and clothing optional.

Very best for Households: Though it’s a single of the busier beaches, Platis Gialos is a excellent selection for households. It does not attract nude sunbathers or a celebration crowd. In addition to the usual sunbeds and umbrellas, there are water sports facilities, restaurants and bars and a mini-mart for low-cost snacks and other sundries.

Also a excellent choice for households is Ornos beach, which is completely developed with plenty of umbrellas and sunbeds, bars, cafes and restaurants, as nicely as shops, markets and a pharmacy.

Nonetheless an additional possibility, although it has fewer facilities, is the Agios Ioannis beach, also known as the “Shirley Valentine” beach for the 1980s English film that was shot right here. The water at the beachfront is shallow enough for youngsters to play. Umbrellas and sunbeds are obtainable for rent and a handful of taverns can supply lunch. Bonus: Nice view of Delos.

Best for Parties: Just verify the Facebook pictures for Paradise beach and you are going to get the picture of a young, multicultural crowd that parties day and evening, fueled by alcohol and loud music. The Tropicana Beach Bar kicks the vibe up even greater.

Very best for Gay Visitors: Stunning Super Paradise could be described as the most “something goes” beach on Mykonos. Though it extended has been a favorite with gay travelers and fans of “clothes optional,” now it attracts any individual and absolutely everyone who loves to celebration. There is a restaurant, disco bar and pool to hold the energy way, way up. Elia, the island’s longest, perhaps cleanest and comparatively quiet beach is well-known with nude sunbathers, each gay and straight.

Best for Celebrity Watching: OK, most celebrities spotted on Psarou beach are most likely to be recognized only by Greeks, since they have a tendency to be high-powered enterprise and financial people. Even so, the beach is the island’s poshest, as reflected by the price of renting a sunbed and umbrella — 25 euros per particular person in high season (15 euros in low), about twice the expense of such rentals on other beaches.

What you get is a clean sandy beach with crystal clear water (with possibly a yacht or two in sight), many taverns and restaurants, including the trendy and costly Nammos restaurant and bar. The menu involves refined Greek dishes, grilled meat and fish and pastas, but the location can get crowded (the service, spotty) in higher season.

If your wardrobe is quick on Armani, the Luisa Beach boutique there can help. The spa can supply a soothing massage.

The diving school serves both novices and professionals.

Best for Peace and Quiet: Although there can be no guarantees in high season, Lia is the least created beach and the farthest away from town, so you will require a taxi to get there — or you can walk from Kalafatis. The sand is coarse, but the atmosphere is relaxed, and there are umbrellas and sunbeds. For refreshments: a fish tavern and a coffee property.

Best for Active Types: Waves and winds make Kalafatis a windsurfer’s paradise. You can rent what you need to have jet skis are also available. Kalafatis also has a dive center. Along with a couple of taverns, the Thalassa restaurant (element of the Aphrodite Hotel) provides food and drink.

Lunching

Greek cuisine reflects its long history, with flavors that are Levantine, Turkish, Italian and Balkan. Even though you will discover examples of a lot of cuisines on Mykonos, from Chinese to Italian to French, your best bet will be the regional Greek specialties. Most of the restaurants in the harbor location serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Several remain open quite late.

For the ideal souvlaki, gyros and other street food, the most common place is Jimmy’s in the heart of Hora the spot has been serving up inexpensive, tasty eats for 30 years (Two can consume well, with a soft drink every, for much less than 10 euros). (Lakka open 11 a.m. till the bars close in the early morning hours)

At Rouvera, on the harbor waterfront, the waiter will bring the catch of the day for your approval. Order it grilled and ask for it to be “cleaned” — and beheaded, unless you think, as a lot of foodies do, that the head is the very best portion. With a fresh Greek salad, some crisp french fries and maybe a chilled Mythos draft beer, you can linger to enjoy the view and use the free of charge Wi-Fi. (Gialos 22890/28223 open 8 a.m. to midnight or 1 a.m. late March to November)

Next door, at the Music Cafe there’s also cost-free Wi-Fi and a comparable menu that includes large grilled prawns (langoustines, really). Fresh fish is priced by the kilo, and even though some rates might appear high, the fish are usually massive adequate to be shared. Each areas have grilled meats, excellent moussaka and other Greek specialties and desserts. (Gialos 22890/27625 open eight a.m. until about 12:30 a.m. late March by means of November)

Close to Manto Square (Taxi Square) is Niko’s, a single of Mykonos’ oldest restaurants, popular with tourists and locals alike — and 1 of the spots frequented by Petros Pelican. The menu consists of grilled meat and fish, lots of Greek specialties like stuffed cabbage, stuffed tomatoes and the ubiquitous moussaka. (22890/24320 open 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. March to November)

Nearby is Antonini’s, yet another old-timer that has been about forever (or at least because 1955), exactly where you may possibly sample the taramosalata (a creamy dip of cod caviar) and tender grilled octopus. (22890/22319 open 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. March to November)

For the very best crepes on the island, it’s Bougazi on Polikandrioti Street, behind the taxi stand. You can choose sweet (Europeans enjoy the Nutella filling) or savory (perhaps fresh veggies and feta cheese?). If you’re in the mood later for window buying, the high-end jeweler next door, if he’s not too busy, loves to share stories about his handmade pieces. The art gallery across the street, like many on the island, functions original functions by neighborhood artists. (22890/24066 open 1 p.m. till the bars close at 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. from March to November)

If you choose to devote time on the Agios Sostis beach, you are going to be in for a treat. Adjacent to the beach and atop a hill is Kiki’s, an institution that serves scrumptious meat and fish grilled on a charcoal barbecue. (Open 11 a.m. to six p.m. Might to October)

Staying in Touch
There is no shortage of World wide web cafes in Mykonos they are open for the duration of cruise season, from late March until November, generally from ten a.m. to previous midnight. Two — Web Globe and Quickly Internet Mykonos — are situated near the primary bus station (Fabrica). In town, you will uncover Angelos (Xenias Street 22890/24106) and Net World (Tria Pigadia). However, a lot of restaurants and cafes (indicators posted) supply free Wi-Fi, so unless you want to really use a personal computer, why not appreciate a good meal or a tempting Greek dessert while you check your e-mail?
Shore Excursions

Very best for 1st-Timers: Most lines offer you some version of the island tour, typically in mixture with a beach or yet another attraction. Generally, these consist of a photo quit at Agios Ioannis beach (with views of the island of Delos) a tour of the 16th century Panagia Tourliani Monastery in the picturesque village of Ano Mera free of charge time at Kalafatis Beach (not adequate for a swim, but lengthy sufficient for a stroll and purchase of refreshments) and a guided walking tour of Mykonos town that includes the famous windmills, Tiny Venice and the ancient Byzantine Paraportiani Church. There is typically sufficient time left for independent exploration and shopping.

Greatest for History Buffs: Not to be missed is the three.5-hour trip to the island of Delos, birthplace of Apollo and a UNESCO Planet Heritage site. Following a 20-minute ride on a ferry, the two-hour guided walking tour explores this vast archeological internet site, which includes temples, statuary and a modest museum. There’s also a complete-day version that requires in Delos and quite much everything that is included in the standard island tours. This option makes for a really tiring (possibly exhausting) day and might be a good alternative only for hardier visitors who really feel they simply have to sample all that Mykonos has to offer.

Best for Beach Bums: Though it really is not difficult to get to any of the island’s a lot of beaches by taxi (some by public bus), for these who’d like effortless door-to-door service, most lines offer a beach package that supplies roundtrip transportation for a three-hour keep on a common beach: Platis Gialos, Kalafatis, Paradise or Elia. Occasionally (often with the upscale lines) the package consists of a reserved lounge, umbrella and some refreshment.
