We fished in a steady and strong wind all day. We were absolutely grinding it out, cast after cast, for many miles on top of this untamed river. I was discouraged that I had only managed two fish so far during the day. It was tough, man. Was it me? The conditions? Maybe it was that mayfly hatch which was occurring all around us?
Toward the end of the float, haggard and motivation depleting, I had made it to the bottom of this particular shoal complex. I looked up through the sun soaked staircase to see Evan Howard tossing a fly, in the stout wind, on unrestrained moving current, trying to catch the fish that I had thought about catching. Sometimes, the grind offers more rewards than the destination. One day I’ll make it to the takeout, but I hope it’s no time soon.
